[NEWS UPDATE] WASHINGTON, DC — Pope Francis commemorated, during Mass held April 12, 2015, the slaughter of Armenians by Ottoman Turks the first genocide of the 20th century . According to the New York Times, “Francis said it was a duty of everyone not to forget the ‘senseless slaughter’ of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Turks from 1915 to 1923.”
As CelebrateGreece.com honors the 100th year anniversary (April 24, 1915+) of the horror of this often forgotten holocaust, we offer the video program The Armenian Genocide: 1915-1923 as a memorial to the Armenian and Greek victims of Christian genocides.
This simple film is a collection of archival interviews and the documenting of related public events. Stories of the Muslim Ottoman Turks committing the first case of modern day genocide and ethnic cleansing of up to 1,500,000 Armenian Orthodox Christians by forced death marches and burnings. Also, between 1915 and 1922 over 350,000 Greek Orthodox Christians of the Pontos and up to 1,000,000 Greek Orthodox Christians of Micra Asia were exterminated by forced death marches and burnings. “Holocaust” comes from the Greek "olokaftoma," meaning total consumption by fire.
We hope that the survivors who share their memories and stories of unspeakable pain will help the world remember this grotesque crime.
